She belongs to the part of the world that hasn't been written down.
Sarah Berti writes as Leaf. She has spent twenty-five years taking people into places that change them — wilderness, classrooms, and the interiors of their own unfinished books.
She holds degrees in English Literature from Trent University and Outdoor & Experiential Education from Queen's University. At Trent she studied myth under Sean Kane, author of Wisdom of the Mythtellers. She has taught in public and private schools, in wilderness programs and in transformational training settings — Norval Outdoor School, Outward Bound, director of Mulmur Hills Camp, co-director of Camp Prospect — designing curriculum and experience for a quarter of a century. The work has always been the same: build the correct conditions, then let experience do what instruction cannot.
Her attention sits where nature, myth, coherence and neurodivergence meet. It is a strange country to specialize in, and it explains most of what she makes.
Her poetry appears in Reliquiae, Mythic Circle, RIC Journal and Luna Arcana. Her novel Embersong, co-written with O'ran Ruadh, was published in 2022, with film rights held by Mirthquake Productions.
As a developmental editor she has spent years inside other people's manuscripts, finding the story underneath the draft and building the structure strong enough to carry it. She has spent considerably longer inside her own. That work — the close read, the question the writer has been avoiding — is the foundation under First Forge. Her editorial practice is Bright Leaf Literary, offering editing and ghostwriting for people with something difficult to get out.
She lives off-grid at Heartwood, in the Land Between — the rugged country where the Canadian Shield gives way to the St Lawrence Lowlands — on a rocky shore surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wildland. She grows food, harvests wild edibles, and keeps company with ravens, herons, moss, billion-year-old rock and a very old turtle. She has never been able to stop paying attention.
